Zzzzz

Was in a class this week. The class that gives my school its Zip! (as the profs tout it in their book and their lectures)

For the non-americans, zip = pin code.

Anyway i a sidetrack...
Such a famous course and what do i see everywhere?
Nodding heads... everyone around catching 40 winks.

Fast asleep.

I had my candy (free from my dept) giving me the sugar shock to keep me going through the lecture....

Networking

Networking. The thing that defines the 21st century. Its amazing. It keeps us connected, and in touch. Networking. The thing of the future. It adds to our conveniences, and brings the world to our doorstep. Networking. A hot topic. Big enough to have the whole world driving at. Networking. If you dont have it, you got nothing. Networking. The best thing to happen to us all.

Or is it?

Networking. Touted to be the basket of benefits that we never had before. But at what cost? Consider this. Over the past week, I have been chatting on a popular messenger client with my flatmate; who has been in the next room. And what were we discussing? At 4 am, when we were both in the midst of homework, he pings to ask when i plan to sleep, or if i'm making progress. It got better yest. Both of us wanted a break, and he pings me telling me to meet him in the kitchen for a snack!

Networking. Brings the world to us. Again, at what cost? Recently i made a few purchases. Rather big ones in the life of a student. A laptop, its bag. Big stuff. Both online. I didnt even see either of them. The laptop, i bought on my own. The bag through consultation with family at home and a friend here. Thankfully they all agreed on the same colour of the bag i chose, and the decision was a lot easier. But thats not the point. The point is I bought something without even looking at it. Convenient? Yes. Reliable? Not necessarily. You can get anythin online. And shud u trust everyone?

Networking. The thing of the future. Soon you will have everything you need at your fingertips. All there with you; always. Whenever u want it. Do you really want that? Sure, it has its advantages. Do they outweigh the costs? If u can get information whenever u want it, anyone can get to u whenever they want to. After all its all one package. Its not separable. Want it that way? Then its not networked. So it defeats the purpose.

Limiting human interaction. Thats what networking is doing. In a big way. Isolation. Thats where its taking us. To our LCD screens, on a desk, a lap, or in our hands.

Networking. With our displays.

P.S. Considering I am currently focussing on networking, I am not sure why this piece came out.

Hi, I'm a ......

Hi! My name is.. (what?) My name is.. (who?)
My name is.. (huh?) My name is.. (what?)
My name is..

A perfect example of what not to do at a job fair. Fair? More like a carnival! With over 170 companies on campus for recruitment, the place was expected to be overflowing with recruiters. And it was. Contrary to what I thought, however, it was really well organized.

The day, however, was a recipe for disaster. With assignments lined up for submission over the week, and a test in the middle of the day, followed by a lab session immediately after, there was not too much time to go and make use of the event! But, fear not, I tread where people rarely do! ;-)

Got dressed up in my suit (yes, we have to be professionally dressed) and with resumes and company research and the map of the arena in hand, I set off to the "park". Reached there, got my name tag, and voila, I was in. Havign reached bright and early at 10 am, the crowds were not too big, and soon I was done with 4 companies. Thats when the lines began to grow. My classmates, still fast asleep I presume, were nowhere to be seen. My seniors, however, were all over the place. I think I met the entire class there :-D

How was it?
Well, the thing about joining classes 3 weeks ago, kind of makes it a little tough to try for an internship already. Besides, most companies that come now, look for full time hires for July. They look for summer interns (beginning May) sometime in January. Go figure! So today was more of a scouting session. Handing over resumes, getting a feel of what they think of me, and the like. Oh and of course, the freebies. Got a nice t-shirt, an awesome pen with a built in LED light, and a pen that needs to be "unclicked" before it can be used to write!

What next?
Thats what I want to know. I guess its just a patience game now. Wait till the turn of the year, and begin again!

All I need is just a little patience
(inhale) Patience...

Birthday Week

This week we celebrated the first two birthdays in our class since we reached here. What makes it more famous is the people whose birthday's they were. Somehow, they've procured unique nicknames for themselves. First we had the king and then we had the queen. Quite rightfully, the "Royal Family" were the first to start the birthday ceremonies.

The king, chivalrous man that he is, allowed the queen to host her birthday dinner before him, in spite of his birthday occuring before hers. ( I wont comment on whether he will ever throw the party at all ;-) coz thats a different story all together!)

One thing I can say for sure, this batch of people (my classmates btw) are master-chefs in their own right. It gets better, they dont mind calling us over and cooking for us, either. My turn will come, I promise you.. my kitchen is still not old enough to provide the feast that everyone deserves!

Tonight was no different either. Her highness, prepared quite a feast. The chicken was awesome. (We have some awesome non-veg cooks here... thankfully!) The souffle topped it off.....

Pictures? No i dont think its fair to you all... everytime you visit, your mouth would water, and I cant do that to you.. it would be too mean of mean... now u know how delicious it was....
